A driver for Houston-area bus services was detained by police on Sunday after allegedly stabbing a customer after a bus ride, officials confirmed.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, or METRO, said the altercation took place around 9 p.m. Sunday at the Greenspoint Transit Center. A patron had boarded the bus and “made physical contact” with the driver, the public transit agency said.

At that point, the driver and the passenger began fighting, which continued once the bus had stopped at the station in north Houston, just east of Interstate 45.

Once the bus had stopped, the driver “retrieved a sharp object and stabbed the customer,” a METRO spokesperson said. The extent of the victim’s injuries was not immediately clear, but the victim was hospitalized and was expected to recover as of Monday morning, according to METRO.

The driver was detained by law enforcement at the bus station.

“METRO is cooperating fully with law enforcement as the investigation continues,” Kaila Contreras-Aradillas, a spokesperson for METRO, said in a statement.

METRO did not share the identity of the driver accused of stabbing the customer, nor did it name the customer.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office could not immediately confirm if any criminal charges had been filed against the driver.
