An inmate at State Correctional Institution at Dallas will face assault charges after being found with a makeshift weapon following a fight with another prisoner, according to state police.

Jeremy Cruz, 45, of Emmaus, is accused of assaulting 24-year-old Christopher Williams on J Block of the Jackson Twp. prison around 8:25 p.m. Oct. 24.

According to police, a correctional officer saw the pair throwing punches at each other’s faces. While breaking up the fight, the officer discovered Cruz was in possession of a padlock attached to an extension cord, police said.

Cruz was combative with the officer and had to be placed in wrist restraints, police said. The officer then secured the weapon.

Troopers said assault charges were pending against Cruz, who is serving time for fleeing police in Monroe County.
