Extraordinary warmth through Christmas

  • December 23, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – No need to reach for winter outfits just yet, as the record warmth will continue into Saturday. Change, however, is on the horizon.

More Record Warmth

Extraordinary warmth for the season returns this afternoon. It will be sunny with, generally, a light west-southwest breeze. My forecast high for Lubbock is nearly 30 degrees above the average for Christmas week. The December 23 record is 80°, set on the date in 1955 and tied on the date in 1964.

Clear this evening but patchy fog is likely to develop late tonight. The fog may be widespread both Wednesday and Christmas mornings. If you’ll be traveling, take note of this possible hazard.

Though chilly to start, low temperatures Wednesday morning will again be above average for the date. That will be the case through at least Sunday morning.

Christmas Day

Other than potential fog Christmas morning, Christmas will be partly cloudy and it will become breezy. It will be the area’s warmest Christmas on record. For Lubbock, the weather record dates back to 1911. The current December 25 record high is 76° (1955). My forecast high is 83°!

The weather will beckon kids of all ages who received outdoor toys to head outside. The same conditions – dry, breezy, and very warm – will result in an elevated grassland fire danger. Be extra cautious with anything which might generate a flame, spark, or excessive heat.

You can anticipate more of the same Friday and Saturday. Change, however, is just around the corner.

Change on the Way

A strong cold front is expected late Saturday, bringing much cooler air to the area and – possibly – some light wintry showers. At this time, the chance of meaningful precipitation remains low. If we see any, it will be Sunday through Monday morning, and I expect it to be very light.

The cooler, more seasonably typical, weather is anticipated to continue into the start of the new year.

On This Date

On this date in 2002, a low pressure system moving across the Southern Rockies interacted with cold air over West Texas, bringing wintry precipitation to the region. Up to eight inches of snow accumulated in Parmer County, six inches in Castro and Briscoe Counties, and four inches in Bailey and northern Swisher Counties. Some convective snow (“thunder-snow”) was observed during the event, resulting in two to three inch per hour snowfall rates. The heavy snow resulted in a number of road closures. Light snow continued intermittently through the early morning hours of Christmas Eve.
