A man who went inside to rescue his wife from their burning home remains in critical condition after firefighters pulled him from the house in the Singing Hills neighborhood, Dallas-Fire Rescue spokesperson Jason Evans said Tuesday.

DFR had initially said Monday the man had died after being rushed to Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

Firefighters responded at 11:58 a.m. to reports of a fire at the one-story house in the 1200 block of Whispering Trail, Evans said.

Once on scene, firefighters reported seeing smoke and fire coming from the house. A mail carrier who made the 911 call informed firefighters that people were still inside the home.

Firefighters worked to first extinguish the blaze and then look for anyone inside, Evans said. The fire was out by 12:30 p.m., officials said.

Firefighters were able to pull a woman and an unresponsive man, later confirmed as her husband, from inside.

Evans said Tuesday that the initial report about the man’s death was “prematurely released.” The man’s vitals were restored by paramedics and emergency medical staff, and he remains hospitalized, according to Evans.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
