LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Trina Brumley has lived in Slaton her whole life. She says the annual Sausage Fest reminds her of good times.
“It’s definitely one of those memories I’ve had growing up ever since I was a little kid. It was Sausage Fest,” Brumley said. “I hate to say it, but it was never the South Plains Fair that I looked forward to, it was Sausage Fest.”
The event began in Slaton at a time when improvements were necessary for the local community.
“Back in the early 1970s, the school needed some money,” Brumley said, “so they started the Sausage Fest. We had baked bread and smoked sausage, and it has just grown from there. We’re making thousands of pounds every year.”
It’s now time for everyone to see that growth this weekend for the 56th Annual Slaton Oktoberfest Sausage Festival. Sausage sales begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, while live music featuring Gone Country starts at 11 a.m. and runs until 9 p.m.
There will also be beverages and activities for the kids with games, pony rides and even a petting zoo. And there’s something for everyone when it comes time to fill your plate.
“We’re going have smoked German sausage on the plates,” Brumley said. “We’re going to have smoked chicken also, which the Knights of Columbus make and it’s amazing. Then we have green beans, sauerkraut, German potato salad.”
Along with braided bread.
The event will culminate Sunday with food served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and it all helps the St. Joseph Catholic Church. Or you can donate directly to the church at the event.
With a population of roughly 6,000 people, Slaton is all about community. The Sausage Fest makes the community stronger, and they hope everyone can make it out for a good time and a good cause.
“It’s something ingrained in the community and it’s good to keep it going. It’s good to have home-grown fun like this.”
