LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A semi-truck driver accused of crashing into two Lubbock County deputies back in September is now in jail facing criminal charges.
Gregory Vaught, 57, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Illinois police arrested the freight hauler on Thanksgiving and extradited him to Lubbock, where he is being held on $50,000 bond.
The crash happened Sept. 9 when deputies Andrew Cavazos and Jorge Martinez were helping a family stranded on I-27 at the 98th Street bridge. Police say Vaught’s truck smashed into their patrol units, pinning the deputies against the wall and forcing Deputy Cavazos over the edge.
A group of good Samaritans rushed from work sites nearby to rescue him.
A lawsuit against Vaught and the trucking company claims he was working on his phone at the time of the crash. The lawsuit seeks at least $1 million in damages for the deputies and the family they were helping.
The case is set to go to trial in August.
