LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The South Plains is experiencing unseasonably warm Christmas weather, with Lubbock setting an all-time December record high of 86° Thursday, marking the second time in one week the region has broken temperature records. The previous record for todays date was 76° set back in 1955.

The new record surpasses the previous monthly high of 85° set just three days earlier on December 22. Clovis also recorded record-breaking temperatures Thursday.
The warm conditions were driven by westerly winds in the 20-25 mph range across northern counties.
Warm weather continues through Saturday
Fair weather is expected Thursday night with mild temperatures and light westerly winds.

Despite slightly cooler conditions and lighter winds Friday compared to Thursday, temperatures in Lubbock are still expected to exceed the 80-degree record mark Friday afternoon.

The record-breaking heat will persist through Saturday, with forecasters expecting highs to remain well above normal for late December.
Cold front arrives Sunday

The warm pattern will break Sunday as a cold front moves through the region. Temperatures will drop noticeably Monday, with the South Plains experiencing cooler conditions heading into the new week.
A slim chance for light snow is possible over the southwest South Plains Monday as colder air settles in.
Temperatures rebound before New Year’s
Milder conditions will return for Tuesday and New Year’s Eve, with temperatures warming back up before the calendar turns to 2026. The pattern will remain cooler than this week’s record-breaking warmth, but still above normal for late December and early January.
