McDonald’s decision is a crucial one for the Longhorns, who have lost several other key pieces on defense, particularly in the secondary.
Michael Taaffe, McDonald’s All-American safety partner, is moving on. So are starting cornerbacks Jaylon Guilbeau and Malik Muhammad. Texas is also losing both of its most important linebackers, with Anthony Hill Jr. heading to the NFL and Liona Lefau bound for the transfer portal.
McDonald will be one of the key building blocks for new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. Known for his physical style of play, McDonald started 12 games this season and compiled 73 tackles to go with three interceptions.
Muschamp, who head coach Steve Sarkisian said will work closely with the secondary, has a strong reputation when it comes to developing safeties. During his first stint with the Longhorns, he coached two-time All-American Earl Thomas, who went on to play in seven Pro Bowls and made five All-Pro teams during a sensational NFL career.
