EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 64-year-old man was arrested on charges of DWI and evading arrest on Friday, Dec. 26 in East El Paso, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said.

David Navarro, 64, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated — third or more time — and evading arrest or detention with a vehicle. He was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility with bonds totaling $22,500, the Sheriff’s Office said.

At about 6 p.m. on Friday, deputies responded to a call for service in the Horizon area about a silver Dodge Ram pickup reported to be swerving in and out of traffic.

At 6:05 p.m., deputies observed the vehicle traveling westbound on Interstate 10 near mile marker 35 and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver failed to stop and continued driving before coming to a stop at the intersection of Gateway West and Lee Trevino.

Deputies then took the driver — identified as Navarro — into custody without incident.

The Sheriff’s Office provided video of the incident. You can see a deputy with their gun drawn when the suspect finally stopped and was subsequently taken into custody.

“Choosing to drive while intoxicated is dangerous on its own, but attempting to evade law enforcement while impaired only escalates the risk to innocent drivers and our deputies,” Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said. “This type of behavior will not be tolerated, and we will continue to take action to keep our roadways safe.”
