A 34-year-old man was shot by police on Sunday after officers discovered his parents dead inside their home during a welfare check, McKinney police said.

McKinney police were called to a home in the 5300 block of Dunster Drive for a welfare check just before 10 a.m. after family members reported not hearing from the residents for several days. Responding officers entered through the back door and found two homicide victims in the living room, Leonard Ragan, 73, and Jackie Ragan, 72, the report states.

As officers continued to search the home, they found 34-year-old Bryce Ragan inside a bedroom, armed with a firearm. Police said they gave him several commands, which he did not comply with.

Two officers fired their weapons, hitting Bryce Ragan multiple times. Officers immediately provided lifesaving aid until emergency medical services arrived. McKinney PD said no officers were injured.

Bryce Ragan was taken to the hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition. Police said Bryce Ragan is a suspect in the death of his parents, Leonard and Jackie Ragan.

This was the second time officers had visited the home in the past 24 hours. They conducted a welfare check Saturday night after a family member called saying they hadn’t heard from the Ragans in several days.

Neighbors shaken by the day’s events

“I’ve lived here in this neighborhood for 15 years and this neighborhood has always been very safe. I’ve never seen any major incidents, definitely nothing like this,” said Zach Barrett, who lives nearby. “But as far as I know, I’ve never seen anything remotely close to this in the 15 years that I’ve lived in this neighborhood.”

Police have not said the cause of death for the victims, but the two officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave, which is normal department policy.

The investigation is ongoing.
