A security guard was detained for questioning after a fatal shooting early Sunday morning in the parking lot of a 7‑Eleven in West Dallas, according to police.

The shooting occurred just before 3 a.m. in the 1800 block of Sylvan Avenue, the Dallas Police Department said.

Investigators said a security officer was sitting inside a gray sedan in the store’s parking lot when a man approached and briefly spoke with him. During the encounter, police were told the man reached into the vehicle and took a firearm from the guard’s car.

According to police, the man then attempted to flee the scene in a dark-colored Dodge Charger. As the vehicle pulled away, the security guard exited his sedan and fired multiple shots.

The gunfire caused the Charger to lose control and crash head-on into a pickup truck parked near the gas pumps, police said.

First responders transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Crime scene investigators were seen throughout the morning collecting evidence near the front of the store and across the parking lot. Several shell casings were recovered at the scene.

Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from the store and interviewing witnesses. The security guard was detained at the scene and questioned by homicide investigators.

No charges have been filed as of Sunday afternoon, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved.
