Cameron Dickey Emerging as Texas Tech’s Breakout Star in 2025 Big 12 Season
After coming into his sophomore campaign virtually unknown nationally, Texas Tech sophomore running back Cameron Dickey is becoming more of a household name every Saturday this fall.
Despite passing for 2,963 yards and 33 touchdown passes and running for 4,065 yards and 61 scores on the ground during a productive high school career in Central Texas, Dickey only received two scholarship offers from Tech and Lamar University coming out of high school.
In limited action as a freshman, Dickey showed his potential, averaging 5.5 yards per carry on just 41 carries.
Since USC transfer Quinten Joyner went down with an ACL tear this season, opportunities and the spotlight have shifted to the talented Dickey, who has delivered big time for the Red Raiders. Through six games this season, Dickey has run or caught a touchdown in every Red Raider game and leads the Big 12 with nine total touchdowns.
“I came into the season with the mentality to get in where I fit in and contribute where I can even on special teams since we had three backs in the backfield, but that’s all changed for me since Q went down, and me and J’Koby have had to step into that role, and we’ve done that well,” Dickey told PFSN.
“The momentum of the season has helped me get more comfortable with my expanded role each game, which has helped me be successful this season. Getting into the endzone every game is an amazing feeling as I trust the play calls our coach calls while staying patient and knowing eventually I’ll find a way in there”.
Dickey is fully fledged in the middle of a breakout season while currently leading the Big 12 with eight rushing touchdowns and has become one of the many reasons Texas Tech is on pace to have the best season in school history.
The talented sophomore has been at his best since Tech entered Big 12 play, as Dickey is averaging 98.5 yards per game on the ground while scoring five total touchdowns.
Dickey’s touchdown output is even more impressive when you add in the fact that three of them have come from 55 yards out or further, highlighted by his career-high 71-yard touchdown last week against Kansas on Tech’s first offensive play from scrimmage.
Dickey Joins Texas Tech History Books With Explosive Performance
The explosive play was a precursor of things to come as Dickey went over the 100-yard mark for the first time in his collegiate career before finishing the game with 263 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
When the dust settled, Dickey produced the fifth-best single-game rushing performance in Texas Tech history while morphing into one of the best running backs in the country this season.
“It’s awesome to be blessed to make plays on these big stages as the middle school version of myself would definitely be impress with where I’m at now, but there’s always room for improvement and I’m work everyday to keep getting better,” Dickey said.
“There’s always more to go get, and I definitely feel you will see more big plays out of me in the future. My goals going forward is get over 1,000 rushing, All-Big 12 honors, and help my team with our school’s first national championship.”
After coming into the season unknown, Dickey is now on several postseason award watch lists, and a couple of NFL teams have him on their 2027 draft board if he were to come out after his junior season.
If you’re not on the Dickey train, now is a good time to get on, as the humble running back from Central Texas is quietly becoming the face of the most surprising football program in the nation this fall.
