Texas has its own issues leading up to the bowl game, albeit without nearly as much drama. Head coach Steve Sarkisian fired defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski and passing defense coordinator Duane Akina, which means co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Johnny Nansen will likely call the defensive plays against Michigan. Texas has also had multiple players enter the transfer portal or opt out of the bowl game, including starters such as running back Quintrevion Wisner, receiver DeAndre Moore Jr., linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., cornerback Malik Muhammad and safety Michael Taaffe.

Texas quarterback Vince Young set the table for the Longhorns’ run to the national championship the following season with 192 yarDS, four TDs rushing and 180 yards and another passing TD against Michigan, and Dusty Mangum booted the game-winning, 37-yard field goal as time expired.

Players to watch: Quarterback Bryce Underwood, a 6-foot-4, 228-pound freshman from Detroit, has endured an up-and-down debut season after joining the Wolverines as the nation’s top quarterback recruit in the 2025 class. Like many players on the Michigan team, he’s also endured his share of transfer rumors after the firing of Moore. He’s thrown for 2,229 yards and has 14 total touchdowns for the season.

Running back Jordan Marshall, a 5-11, 216-pound sophomore, teamed with Justice Haynes to form one of the country’s best backfield tandems, but he may have to carry a full load considering Haynes missed the final four games of the regular season with a right foot injury. Marshall ran for 932 yards and 10 touchdowns on 150 carries this season and should be recovered from a shoulder injury that limited him at the end of the regular season.

Linebacker Jimmy Rolder, a 6-2, 240-pound redshirt junior, emerged as the blue-collar boss of the defense with 43 solo tackles and a pair of sacks while earning second-team All-Big Ten honors.

Central Texas connections:  Offensive lineman Blake Frazier, a redshirt freshman from Vandegrift High School, became a regular in the Wolverines’ rotation this season while appearing in every game with five starts at left tackle.

When Texas has the ball

The departure of running backs Wisner and CJ Baxter to the transfer portal only means that quarterback Arch Manning could get even more work — at least until Sarkisian decides to get youngster KJ Lacey some game action. Manning (2,942 yards, 24 touchdowns passing) needs 58 yards through the air to record just the 11th 3,000-yard passing season in school history. Colt McCoy (2007-09), Sam Ehlinger (2018-19), Quinn Ewers (2023-24), Major Applewhite (1999), Chris Simms (2002) and Vince Young (2005) are the only other Texas quarterbacks to throw for 3,000 yards in a single season.

The Wolverines are a middle-of-the-pack bunch against the pass after giving up 210.6 yards per contest through the air this season, but they rank fourth in the Big Ten by allowing just 101.7 yards rushing per game. Their pass defense won’t be helped out by the opt-outs from edge rushers Derrick Moore and Jaishawn Barham, the two best pass rushers on the team. But senior defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny remains an elite run defender who will give a questionable Texas rushing attack fits — if he ultimately plays in the game.

When Michigan has the ball

Michigan wants to establish the run to set up the pass, and that won’t change even with the reported opt-out of veteran interior offensive lineman Giovanni El-Hadi. The Wolverines rank third in the Big Ten with 213.2 yards rushing per game, are tied for first with 32 rushing touchdowns and stand second in yards per carry at 5.5. But stopping the run has become the strength of the Texas defense, which ranks third in the SEC with 98.1 yards rushing allowed per game. Losing linebackers Anthony Hill Jr. and Liona Lefau hurts, but the recommitment of tackle Hero Kanu for the Citrus Bowl and the 2026 season bolsters the defensive line.

The Longhorns’ pass defense struggled this season, which led to the recent firings of Kwiatkowski and Akina. And the Longhorns will also play the Citrus Bowl without Muhammad and fellow cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau as well as Taaffe, who are all prepping for the upcoming NFL draft. But can Underwood and a mediocre Wolverine receiving corps led by Andrew Marsh (42 catches, 641 yards) take advantage?

Texas vs Michigan key matchup

Texas edge rusher Colin Simmons  vs. Michigan left tackle Blake Frazier

Article continues below this ad

Frazier, the Austin local who starred at Vandegrift High School, has been a pleasant surprise while taking over at left tackle for the Wolverines in the second half of the season. But he has just five career starts and must face off against Texas sophomore Colin Simmons, who already has 20 career sacks and 27 ½ career tackles for a loss.

Texas vs Michigan predictions

Danny Davis: Texas, I guess. Predicting the outcomes for non-playoff bowl games is a fool’s errand, and that is definitely the case for the Citrus Bowl since both teams are dealing with significant changes to their rosters and coaching staffs. But since Texas and Michigan will have their quarterbacks, I’ll go with the more experienced Arch Manning and the Longhorns.

Article continues below this ad

Thomas Jones: Texas 24, Michigan 12. Think of it as a spring game for both squads, like Steve Sarkisian and his Longhorns’ coaching staff. Arch Manning may not play much more than a half, but he’ll do enough to restart all the offseason Heisman Trophy chatter.

David Eckert: Texas 30, Michigan 20. But that pick is accompanied by one big giant shrug. Predicting who wins these bowl games is essentially just an exercise in picking which team will care more. Things are much less chaotic in the Longhorns’ camp, so I’ll go with them.
