When Texas football met Michigan at the Big House in Ann Arbor less than 16 months ago, the starting lineups included three top-10 NFL draft picks and six other players chosen in the first two rounds of the 2025 draft. Oh, and don’t forget about Quinn Ewers, who has emerged to become the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins.
In total, 21 of the 44 players who started that game are currently employed by NFL teams. That includes nine players from the Texas offense, which found the end zone four times in a 31-12 victory for the Longhorns. That leaves just running back Quintrevion Wisner — who will enter the transfer portal and won’t play when Texas and Michigan meet again Wednesday in the Citrus Bowl — and guard DJ Campbell, who has not made an announcement about his status for the game.

On the Michigan side of things, carving through the carnage to get a look at the Citrus Bowl depth chart is a borderline impossible task. The Wolverines earlier this month fired coach Sherrone Moore after a scandal landed him in a courtroom facing trespassing and stalking charges. They hired longtime Utah stalwart Kyle Whittingham to replace him, but he’ll take charge after the bowl game, leaving Wolverines assistant Biff Poggi to lead Michigan (9-3) against the Longhorns (9-3).

Poggi recently estimated that up to 25 Wolverines could opt out of the game. As of Saturday night, Michigan had only publicly acknowledged three: guard Giovanni El-Hadi, defensive end Derrick Moore and linebacker Jaishawn Barham. All three of those players started when the Longhorns and Wolverines last met.
MORE: Are Horns, Wolverines too prestigious to take Citrus Bowl seriously?
Whether more opt-outs follow or not, these versions of the Longhorns and Wolverines will look unrecognizable compared to the units that took the field last year — particularly at quarterback, where a pair of household names now sit in command of the offenses.

Arch Manning vs Bryce Underwood: Two big-name QBs finish out first seasons
In last season’s matchup, Ewers met Michigan’s Davis Warren in a lopsided quarterbacks matchup. Ewers threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns while Warren compiled 204 yards through the air to go with a TD and two interceptions. Ewers is now in the NFL, ceding control of the Texas offense to Arch Manning. Warren tore his ACL in Michigan’s bowl game last season and has spent this season watching Bryce Underwood from the sidelines.
Underwood, the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting class, has sustained middling results as a freshman starter. He’s completed 61% of his passes for 2,229 yards, throwing nine touchdowns and six interceptions. He’s also a factor in the rushing game, where he’s picked up 323 yards and five TDs.
Manning was also once the No. 1 overall recruit coming out of high school. He waited for two years behind Ewers before finally inheriting the starting job this season. Struggling initially, Manning has been outstanding down the back half of the season. In total, he’s passed for 2,942 yards with a 61.4% completion rate, finding the end zone 24 times with seven interceptions. Like Underwood, he’s a factor on the ground, using his legs to pick up 244 yards and eight touchdowns.

Texas vs Michigan: Coaching staffs set to look different in Citrus Bowl
Moore’s ouster means that the Michigan coaching staff will sport a fundamentally different look in the Citrus Bowl compared to last season’s game. Poggi, who joined the staff last offseason, will take charge.

The Texas staff has undergone some substantial changes since then, too. Most notably, defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski was fired earlier this month in favor of Will Muschamp. Kwiatkowski’s defense held Michigan to 12 points and 284 total yards in last season’s matchup. In 10 meetings with top-10 foes over the last two seasons, Kwiatkowski’s unit allowed an average of 22.6 points.
Muschamp won’t be holding the defensive reins for the bowl game, though. That task goes to linebackers coach Johnny Nansen.
There’s been a fair amount of less significant assistant coaching turnover, too. Four of the assistants Texas brought to Ann Arbor are no longer with the program. Michigan has moved on from two of the assistants who coached in that game, too.
