It’s officially the start of a new era for the Dallas Renegades.
The Renegades are moving forward with Rick Neuheisel as their new head coach. The team officially announced the Neuheisel hire on Tuesday morning.
Neuheisel is taking over for Bob Stoops, who announced his retirement from coaching earlier in December. Stoops stepped away from the game after a championship career at the professional and collegiate levels that spanned five decades.
“I am elated to join the UFL as the head coach of the Dallas Renegades,” Neuheisel said in a statement. “I have been a big believer in spring football since its inception with the USFL back in the 80’s when I played quarterback for the San Antonio Gunslingers. It was a thrill then and it is a thrill now. While it is not easy to follow in the footsteps of Bob Stoops, it is really exciting to join the incredible sports scene in Dallas, Texas. I can’t wait to get to work.”

While Neuheisel is new to the UFL, he brings plenty of coaching experience to the Dallas squad. He has held three head coaching positions at the collegiate level, previously guiding programs like Colorado (1995-98), Washington (1999-2002) and UCLA (2008-11).
Neuheisel also worked as an assistant with the Baltimore Ravens from 2005-07. He posted an 87-59 record as a collegiate head coach.
Neuheisel’s latest head coaching gig came with the Arizona Hot Shots of the Alliance of American Football. He held that position in 2019.
The veteran coach currently serves as a college football analyst for CBS Sports.
“The United Football League is fortunate to have a legendary football coach like Rick Neuheisel join its ranks,” UFL president and CEO Russ Brandon said in a statement. “Rick is exceptional at what he does and he raises the bar everywhere he goes. We are excited to see the kind of game that he will bring to our league. It will not only mold our players but take them to the next level.”
The UFL is undergoing a refresh for the 2026 season, with some new teams and new coaching hires across the league. The Renegades will play games this spring at Toyota Stadium in Frisco.
