After several months of rumors and speculation, the Dallas Cowboys released Trevon Diggs. The veteran cornerback returned to the field against the Los Angeles Chargers on Dec. 21, over two months since his last game (Oct. 10 against the Carolina Panthers).

He played again against the Washington Commanders on Christmas, finishing with one tackle. Despite Jerry Jones leaving the door open to keep Diggs on the roster, the team released Diggs, who had been on the roster since 2020.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero shared details about the Cowboys’ decision. He reported that it wasn’t just an incident from Diggs that led the team to release him, but a series of factors that ultimately led to this call.

“My understanding is Diggs’ release was not a result of a specific incident. It was the culmination of multiple factors spread over time, including both performance and other elements. The team felt it was best for both Trevon and the Cowboys to move on at this point.”

The Cowboys beat the Commanders 30-23 on Thursday, improving to 7-8-1. Their season was over after the Philadelphia Eagles secured the NFC East title with a win against the Commanders, which seemingly accelerated the plans they had for Trevon Diggs.

They will close out the season against the New York Giants (3-13). Diggs won’t be on the field, as his future will be somewhere else. In six seasons, he recorded 240 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery for 17 yards, 20 interceptions for 204 yards and two touchdowns and 63 passes defended.

After his first three seasons, Trevon Diggs struggled with injuries. The Cowboys knew they had a special player in the secondary, but not having him on the field meant so much trouble for the defense.
