EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 22-year-old man was arrested on Christmas Eve for possession of a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of a weapon during a traffic stop in East El Paso, according to El Paso police.

Police say that Patrick Cyrus Avila, 22, was arrested after a traffic stop on Christmas Eve near Zaragoza and Vista Del Sol. Police say the traffic stop was initiated after Avila committed a traffic violation.

During the traffic stop, police say they detected an odor of marijuana, which led to the search of the vehicle Avila was driving.

The search resulted in the seizure of illegal narcotics and a 9 mm CZ handgun, police said.

Avila was arrested and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility for possession of a controlled substance (THC), possession of marijuana less than two ounces, and unlawful carrying of a weapon under a total bond of $1,100.
