NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women’s basketball team heads to south Texas for a pair of games out of the Christmas holiday break. Their first stop is at UTRGV on Monday (4 p.m.) followed by a trip to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday (1 p.m.).

The Privateers fell behind early and never could catch up in a 79-68 loss against UIW on Dec. 18. New Orleans was down by 11 after the first quarter and the rest of the game was played evenly on the scoreboard. Shanihya Brown had 19 points and 9 rebounds. Sephora Kayolo had 13 points.

After shooting below 70 percent in four of the first five games of the season, the Privateers have turned around their consistency at the charity stripe. New Orleans has gone over 70 percent in three of the last five games. They had their best performance at the line against UIW (86.4 percent in 23 attempts).

Sephora Kayolo made her debut after missing all of last year due to injury. She got the start against #5 LSU on Dec. 7. Against UIW, Kayolo became the eighth different Privateer on the roster to record a double-digit scoring effort with 13 points on five field goals including three from three-point range.

The Privateers played UTRGV for the first times last season and split two meetings, but prior to that they had 28 meetings against UT-Pan American. The Privateers were 25-3 all-time against UTPA from 1987 to 2013. New Orleans is 3-21 all-time against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and has not beaten the Islanders since 2019.
