Matt Mattox got his start in college coaching in the state of Texas.
He’s headed back to his coaching roots.
Sources tell FootballScoop that Mattox is departing his role as East Carolina’s offensive line coach to take the same position in Neal Brown’s new regime at North Texas.
Mattox’s first-ever collegiate coaching job was at the University of Houston; the Kansas native who also played at Houston has additional coaching stops in the Lone Star State at the University of Texas, as well as the UTSA Roadrunners.
He’s also coached at Bowling Green and had mentored the offensive lines of Blake Harrell’s East Carolina program the past two seasons.
The former Troy and West Virginia head coach, Brown was hired last month at North Texas as replacement for Eric Morris, who left to take over at Oklahoma State.
Brown spent the 2025 season as an analyst in Steve Sarkisian’s Texas Longhorns program; he’s brought multiple Texas staffers with him to his career reboot at North Texas.
