Fort Worth police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred New Year’s Day at a business along South Riverside Drive, leaving one woman dead and a security guard detained.

Officers and Fort Worth Fire personnel responded to reports of a shooting in the 2600 block of South Riverside Drive, south of Interstate 30, at approximately 5:45 p.m. on January 1, according to police.

First responders found an adult woman suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency medical crews attempted life-saving measures, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the man involved in the shooting was working as a security guard at the location. He was detained at the scene and is cooperating with homicide detectives. Authorities said he has not been arrested.

Sequence Of Events Under Review

According to Fort Worth police, investigators determined the incident began when the security guard told the woman she needed to leave the property.

Police said the woman argued with the guard and moved toward him, prompting the guard to deploy pepper spray. Investigators said the woman then retrieved a stabbing weapon from a nearby area and again advanced toward the guard.

At that point, police said the guard fired his service weapon, striking the woman.

Ongoing Investigation

Homicide detectives are continuing to investigate the shooting. Police said evidence gathered so far indicates the incident was isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The woman’s identity will be released by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office after next of kin have been notified.
