Plano East made the key winning plays in a frantic fourth quarter Friday to finally subdue crosstown rival Plano, 50-43, in a District 6-6A game played at Archie McAfee Gymnasium.
“Man,” Lady Panthers head coach Derrick Richardson said. “Rivalry games, you never know.”
The game was tight throughout, with Plano East never leading by more than nine points. Plano pulled within two points, 44-42, on its first 3-pointer of the game with 49 seconds remaining. But Hailey Reed delivered two strong drives and scores down the stretch, the last coming off a cross-court pass, to give the Lady Panthers enough separation to secure the victory.
“We really scheduled tough in non-district to get us ready for district play,” Richardson said. “We had six losses going into district, but we played some tough teams, and that has given the girls confidence. They have more confidence than ever.”
Plano East improved to a perfect 6-0 in District 6-6A play and 13-6 overall. Plano fell to 4-3 in district and 10-6 overall.
Reed finished with 11 points, including six in the fourth quarter. Madeline Bankhead led all Plano East scorers with 15 points, while Arianna Robinson added 13.
