Your dog might be a good boy or girl, but these treats may not be good for them. A brand of dog biscuits is being recalled in seven states, including Texas, for potential contamination with salmonella, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.Â
According to the recall report, salmonella can infect animals that consume these products and also poses a risk to humans who handle contaminated pet products — particularly if they do not thoroughly wash their hands after contact with the products or with surfaces exposed to them.
Consumers Supply Distributing LLC of Sioux City, Iowa, issued the recall on Dec. 24, in cooperation with the FDA.Â
According to the FDA, the recall was initiated after an FDA routine sampling program found the bacteria in the finished products. The company has halted production and distribution of the affected lot as it works with the FDA to investigate the cause of the contamination.
Here’s what to know about the brand of dog biscuits being recalled.Â
Two brands of 4-pound bags of biscuits — Country Vet Biscuits Original Meaty Flavor and Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits — were recalled for potential salmonella contamination.Â
Here is how to identify the affected products:Â
Per the FDA, pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
The recalled products were sold through retail stores in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Montana and Nebraska.
Consumers who have purchased any recalled products should discontinue use of the products and may return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (712) 202-5609, Monday through Friday, 8am – 5pm CST.
