EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A 19-year-old driver, identified as Joshua Palos Hernandez, was arrested after leading El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase during a DWI Task Force operation.

The incident occurred around 1:37 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2026, when deputies observed a black Chrysler 300 failing to signal while changing lanes on Interstate 10.

The vehicle accelerated rapidly, prompting deputies to attempt a traffic stop.

Hernandez refused to stop, evading law enforcement for approximately two miles before being apprehended eastbound on Interstate 10 past the Eastlake exit.

Sheriff Oscar Ugarte emphasized the dangers of such behavior, stating, “This type of behavior puts everyone on the roadway at risk.”

Hernandez was charged with evading arrest/detention with a vehicle and held on a $5,000 bond.

The Sheriff’s Office urges the public to drive responsibly and adhere to traffic laws, particularly during holiday enforcement periods.
