LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – With moldy food, a long-time Lubbock favorite lands at the bottom of the list this week. But, there’s also a buffet of good news.
Abuelo’s at 4401 82nd had 34 violations.
Salsa was above the safe cold temperature of 41 degrees.Cooked rice and shredded chicken were not at least 135 degrees.The inside of the ice machine in the patio area was dirtyThree pans of refried beans were expired and had visual mold on them.Other items were held past their use-by date including, black beans, cooked ground beef and refried beans.The soda nozzles were visibly dirty.Multiple utensils and food contact surfaces were dirty, including: spoons, plates, a lemon slicer, can opener, and cutting board.Cutting boards were damaged and a tub was cracked.There was a strainer in the hand sink. Hand sinks are for hand washing only to prevent cross contamination.The dishwasher was not sanitizing.The waste line under the soda machine was leaking waste water onto the floor.There was an accumulation of water in the mop sink. The person in charge was aware of the issue and told the inspector a pipe was broken.
The inspector notes, due to the number and the nature of the violations – management did not show proper food safety knowledge.

Four tea urns, with tea, were stored at the drink station uncovered.Cleaned service wares (clear plastic containers) were stored wet stacked on drying racks.Two knives’ food contact surfaces were stored inside the space of an attached outer panel of the top of the reach-in cooler at the prep table. The panel is not moveable for cleaning.Ice scoop at the bar was stored with the handle not above the ice product.In the reach-in cooler with desserts, a cardboard was covered in plastic wrap and used as tray to provide additional storage for desserts in bowls.Single-service black bowls were stored inside containers of seasonings between uses.The reach-in cooler with glass storage was visibly soiled on the bottom.Dump sinks in the bar area are visibly soiled in the basins, faucets, and back splash areas.Reach-in cooler door gaskets were visibly soiled in the cooking areas.The racks holding cooked beans, and meats were visibly soiled.The reach-in cooler with the glass storage was visibly soiled around the door surfaces and the adjoining door gaskets.Mop heads that are soiled are stored on the floor next to the mop sink.The floor under the soda machine, and the ice bin is visibly soiled with liquid and debris.The walls in the walk-in cooler were visibly soiled.Two ceiling tiles above the clean wares racks were installed with gaps that had exposure to the insulation.The floor in the walk-in cooler in the prep area has visible gravel where the floor is no longer smooth, nor easily cleanable.The floor under the ice machine and the drink station in the prep area are visibly damaged and holding waste water.
