LUBBOCK, Texas (KOSA) – Both the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders are ranked in their respective AP Top 25 polls.
The men’s team took the court first, playing OSU in their Big XII opener.
No. 15 TTU took care of business against the Cowboys. Red Raiders won 102-80.
JT Toppin led the scoring effort with 23 points. The team also tied a program record for most made three-pointers in a single game with 17.
After the game, Head Coach Grant McCasland talked about the importance of starting the conference schedule with a win.
“Our team’s improving. We’re not perfect. We’re getting better. We’re scrappier,” said McCasland. “If we keep sharing the ball and making strides defensively, we can be a team that competes in this league.”
Texas Tech MBB improved to 11-3 with the win. Their next game is Jan. 6 at No. 8 Houston.
The women’s game followed later Saturday evening. New Lady Raider Stephanie Okechukwu was in attendance, but did not suit up. The 7′1″ center is waiting for her eligibility approval from the NCAA before she can play.
No. 21 Texas Tech WBB handled their opponent as well, defeating Oklahoma State 80-49. Five separate Lady Raiders reached double-digit scoring against the Cowgirls.
With the win, Texas Tech improved to 16-0 for the first time in program history.
Head Coach Krista Gerlich is excited this year’s group were the ones to set the record.
“I’m so proud of this team for creating some history and being the first team in the history of this program for going 16-0,” said Gerlich. “There have been some really good basketball teams. I was on one of them, and we did not go 16-0. So, I am so, so proud of them.”
Additionally, the Lady Raiders improve to 3-0 against Big XII competition. Their next game is Jan. 7 at West Virginia.
