Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed annually on the third Monday in January. The day became recognized as a federal holiday in 1986, dedicated to honoring the civil rights leader’s life and legacy. Here in North Texas, there are an array of volunteer projects, parades and exhibits commemorating Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. PARADE

The Martin Luther King Jr. Parade is returning to its original parade route in South Dallas. It showcases local marching bands, businesses, colorful parade floats, cheerleaders, car clubs, animals and church groups.

People of all ages and running levels can lace up their shoes and hit the pavement. Participants can run or walk the 5K, 10K or half marathon in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.

REACTIVATE DALLAS – MLK FEST 2026

At this event, volunteers help clean up sidewalks and vacant lots in and around the Fair Park neighborhood. After the cleanup, there will be a lunchtime celebration, featuring live music, food and guest speakers.

33RD ANNUAL DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY CELEBRATION

The 33rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day‘s theme this year is “Better Together: Making the Dream a Reality.” Student’s artwork depicting Martin Luther King Jr. will be on display as students vie for a cash prize. Celebration goers are asked to donate canned foods and dried goods.

MLK DAY OF SERVICE FESTIVAL

This free family event, sponsored by the Dallas Wings, features library story time and performances by the AISD Step Teams, Symphony Arlington and Innovative Dance Inc.
