Childress business proud to keep roots in the Texas Panhandle

  • January 5, 2026

CHILDRESS, Texas (KFDA) – A Childress business is sharing why it is important to keep their roots in the Texas Panhandle.

Jennifer Smith, co-owner of 1930 Remnant, says when they were deep in the rodeo industry, there were a lot of cowboy church services.

“We had a vision then to do a wrangler national finals church service. It was called Elevation Sunday. It was for the whole community,” said Jennifer. “We brought together all those small cowboy churches and had one big service.”

Jennifer says when they came home, they felt a void. They wanted to continue that but in their own community.

In 2020 during the COVID pandemic, Jennifer says they really felt a burden to do something for the community.

“The store was part of that vision because they had the wholesale brown STS ranchwear, but we wanted a concept store. We wanted multi-purpose,” said Jennifer.

Jennifer says they wanted something to be able to show other retailers how they could merchandise STS ranchwear beautifully.

“1930 comes from second kings. 1930, it talks about remnants. We will return back to our homeland, put down roots, rise up and prosper once again,” said co-owner Stran Smith.“And the significance of 1930, that was when my grandad decided to start the ranch.”

Stran says in 1930, the nine and the three are a lazy s. That was their family brand forever.

“So that was kind of where we decided to come back home, put down roots, and see if we can rise up and flourish once again,” said Stran.

Support started with their family then community. Stran says he always felt he had a whole village behind him that was supportive, proud, and pushed him to be better.

“So that means everything to me, that support and being from here. I’m so proud to be from Childress, from the Panhandle,” said Stran. “Because it really does mean something.”

Stran says their hats, handshakes, looking people in the eye when speaking to them — it all means something.

“So for me, that’s what our world needs right now. Our country needs is those grassroots men. My granddad, my dad, that their handshake meant something in their word. It was better than a contract,” said Stran.

1930 Remnant is located at 510 N. Main St.
