Roadwork Safety Project in West Texas

That’s right, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has begun their installation of cable median barriers across portions of US 62/82.

On December 31, TxDOT Lubbock posted the reminder on X for all residents of Lubbock County.

 

For those not aware, that’s the portion of highway as seen in this screenshot (Ropesville in bottom left):

 

How Much is This Project Going to Cost?

Safety improvements are great and all, but let’s get to the brass tacks: What’s the price tag on this massive project?

According to the news release from TxDOT, $2.7 million is being spent on adding cable medians to nearly 13 miles of US 62/82 from 73rd Street in Lubbock all the way to the City of Ropesville.

Lubbock Area engineer Joe Villalobos expressed his hope that this will increase overall safety on the roadway:

Cable median barriers are designed to stop vehicles from crossing the open median and prevent the worst kinds of crashes, including head-on collisions.

 

This project is set to run from January 5 through December of this year and drivers can expect to see shoulder and lane closures throughout its duration.
