Oregon State football is set to add a former blue chip wide receiver recruit via the transfer portal.

Texas redshirt freshman wideout Aaron Butler appears to be transferring to OSU, according to his Instagram. Butler added “@beaverfootball” to his bio Monday after taking an official visit to Corvallis on Sunday, but later removed it after this story was published.

OSU wide receivers coach James Finley and new head coach JaMarcus Shephard — himself a longtime wide receivers coach — were potentially able to get Butler’s commitment over the line with a pitch for consistent play time with the Beavers. Butler also embraced OSU’s history, posting photos to his Instagram story of plaques in the Valley Football Center honoring former OSU wideouts Brandin Cooks and Chad Ochocinco.

Butler — originally from Calabasas, California — was a four-star recruit in the 2024 class, rated the No. 24 wide receiver in the country and No. 11 player in California according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. He sat out a portion of his senior season to focus on preparing for college, originally committed to Colorado before eventually landing at Texas.

Butler played in just four total games across two seasons with the Longhorns, buried on the depth chart in consistently one of the top wide receiver units in the nation. He redshirted his freshman season.

Listed at six feet, 170 pounds, Butler was described by 247Sports recruiting analyst Greg Biggins as having a chip on his shoulder, even during high school.

“He’s physical player and has a lot of nastiness in his game,” Biggins wrote in 2022. “Whether he’s blocking or jamming a receiver, he’s looking to physically dominate his opponent and will often stay on his block until he puts him in the ground or off the field. He has both short area quickness and long speed and it will be interesting to see what kind of times Butler can put up on the track. … As a receiver, he has really impressed and is a threat to score every time he touches the football.”

Butler would be among OSU’s first additions via the transfer portal. Keep up with all the incoming and outgoing players for the Beavers using The Oregonian/OregonLive’s transfer portal tracker.
