Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has continued to prove that, no matter the shape of the Aggies’ roster heading into the offseason, the plan is simple: Add the best available players from the transfer portal, and fill positions of need early to land the “bigger fish” down the line.
This week, the headline-worthy visit of former five-star and Auburn transfer wide receiver Cam Coleman lasted a day longer than expected. While he’ll likely visit Texas Tech later this week, the Aggies are in a solid spot to land the former Texas A&M commit.
On the other end, Elko and his staff have now landed seven players from the portal, including South Carolina OL Trovon Baugh and Colorado defensive lineman Bradon Davis-Swan, who should both make an immediate impact and are not considered one-year rentals.
With three commits in the trenches, Elko has shifted focus to defensive back, looking to add one or two cornerbacks, knowing that the safety room is all but secure after landing Colorado transfer safety Tawfiq Byard on Sunday afternoon.
According to On3’s Chad Simmons, Tennessee transfer cornerback Rickey Gibson, who chose the Vols over Georgia in the 2023 recruiting class, has only scheduled one visit this weekend with Texas A&M. After witnessing last weekend’s success, I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes the eighth, ninth, or tenth portal commitment.
