SAN ANTONIO – A Bexar County Jail inmate was hospitalized earlier this month after contracting Monkeypox, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said the inmate was transported to University Hospital on October 11 and will remain there until medically cleared to return to the jail. Monkeypox is not airborne and can only spread through direct contact with a lesion, rash, or scab. It does not survive on surfaces.

The inmate’s cellmate has been moved to the jail’s infirmary for a full medical assessment as a precaution.
