HURST, Texas — Those who regularly use the pedestrian bridge near Hurstview Drive will soon see a major and permanent change to the area.
On Monday January 5, the pedestrian bridge that crosses Highway 121 and 183 between Hurstview Drive and Norwood Drive closed to the public. The move is tied to ongoing highway expansion work beneath the bridge, and it is not a short-term disruption.
The bridge closure is the first step in a larger construction process. According to project officials, the pedestrian bridge will be demolished overnight in mid-January. The removal is necessary because one of the bridge’s support columns conflicts with the planned roadway expansion below. While construction associated with the highway expansion is expected to continue through September 2026, there has been no announcement or timeline indicating the pedestrian bridge will be rebuilt as part of this project. This means pedestrian access in this area is changing for the foreseeable future.
During and after the bridge removal, pedestrians will be rerouted to the Hurstview Drive bridge, which will serve as the designated crossing over Highway 121 and 183. Posted signage will guide foot traffic, and officials are urging people to follow marked detours and avoid the construction zone for safety reasons. While the reroute adds distance for some walkers, project managers say it provides a safe alternative while the expansion work continues.

Impact on students and families
Because the pedestrian bridge has been commonly used by students, the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District is adjusting bus routes to account for the closure. Parents and students can find updated bus stop information by scanning QR codes posted on both sides of the pedestrian bridge.Â
Demolition of the bridge is scheduled to occur overnight in mid-January, though exact timing may shift depending on weather conditions. After demolition, construction crews will continue working as part of the broader capacity improvement project along the highway corridor. Residents are encouraged to pay attention to posted signs, use designated pedestrian detours, and stay clear of active construction areas as work moves forward.
Additional updates will be provided through posted notices at the bridge site and official communications from the school district and project partners.
