Austin-Bergstrom has secured new airline lease agreements, securing the Texas airport’s economic foundation for an ambitious expansion program that will nearly double its gate count.

The $5 billion project, which is targeted for completion in the early 2030s, includes two new concourses, a new arrivals and departures hall, and the redevelopment of the airport’s primary concourse.

Lease agreements with Southwest, Delta, United, American and Alaska include airline commitments for 10 years of continued operation in Austin, the airport said.

The city plans to fund the construction program through airport revenue and reserves as well as with bonds and FAA grants.

Plans call for the addition of 32 gates to augment the airport’s existing 34 gates. The new Concourse B will have 26 gates, including 18 to be utilized by anchor tenant Southwest, which is Austin’s largest carrier. The concourse is in the design phase now with an estimated completion in the early 2030s.

A smaller new concourse, Concourse M, will have six gates and be located on the airfield. Flyers will reach the concourse via bus from Concourse A. Construction is expected to begin this year.

The new arrivals and departures hall will have expanded ticketing and check-in areas, consolidated security checkpoints, more concession space than the current hall and larger baggage claim areas. It’s also under design with an estimated opening in the early 2030s.

Meanwhile, the Barbara Jordan Terminal, which includes Concourse A, will undergo a redevelopment that results in Concourse A expanding. Under the project, the existing concourse, departures hall, ticket counters and baggage claim will be redeveloped into a modernized Concourse A. The concourse will have improved gate seating and a variety of new amenities, the airport said.

Delta will be Concourse A’s largest carrier with 15 gates, followed by American with nine.
