A team that scored 40 points in each of its first two home games raised its scoring average Sunday in a 44-22 victory against the Washington Commanders. I don’t know if the Cowboys are going unbeaten at home this year (currently 2-0-1). I rather doubt it, in fact. But they may set scoring records in the process.

Offense

So this is what the offense looks like when CeeDee Lamb is healthy, when George Pickens is on fire and when Javonte Williams is good for at least five yards a carry. Give Dak the director’s baton and let the music begin. Lamb and Pickens produced 192 receiving yards on more than 21 yards per catch. Williams got his 100 yards and touchdown, which feels like the norm now, and Dak had his fourth straight passer rating of 120 or more (130.4) for the first time in his career.

Defense

If the Commanders had showed up with a receiving corps closer to the league average, this might have been an A-plus performance. It’s about the least scary Jayden Daniels has ever been, and the run defense held Jacory Croskey-Merritt to his worst average (2.5 yards per carry) as a pro. DaRon Bland’s interception for six points had the stadium sounding like it did when Dallas made three straight playoff trips.

Special teams

I don’t know if giving up 26.1 yards per kick on eight returns is a lot, but it felt like Luke McCaffrey did a little damage when he wasn’t getting flipped head over heels. But the routine nature of Brandon Aubrey’s 61-yard field goal can’t be ignored. If Lamb, Pickens, Williams and Jake Ferguson are the Mount Rushmore of Dak’s weapons, then Aubrey is a very worthy No. 5.

Coaching

Little doubt the Cowboys paid attention to analytics as Schottenheimer said, but Matt Eberflus also made personnel changes and appeared to move in a player-friendly direction with more man coverage and risk-taking. It’s the kind of stuff Dallas excelled at when Dan Quinn was on their sideline, although that defense is largely gone. Schottenheimer continues to operate as if he has done all this for years, not weeks.

Overall

It was a blowout of Washington, and the Commanders can point to a couple of key weapons being missed, but I think Dallas had this one in the bank, anyway. There was never any real sign of the Dallas offense being in trouble, and, for a week, anyway, fans can ponder whether a defense capable of supporting Dak and Co. is truly on hand.
