Northwestern State sweeps doubleheader against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

NATCHITOCHES, La. (KALB) – Northwestern State completed a doubleheader sweep against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Prather Coliseum, with the women’s team winning 65-49 and the men’s team claiming a 79-78 victory on a buzzer-beating three-pointer.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi vs NSU (Women’s):

The Demons women’s team dominated their “Fork Cancer” game against the Islanders. Northwestern State started strong as Clarence Djuela powered in for a layup to give the Demons a 4-2 lead.

Nya Valentine extended the lead with a three-pointer, putting Northwestern State ahead 7-3. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fought back late in the first quarter when Knari Hilliday scored in the paint with almost no time remaining, making it 15-13 with NSU leading.

The Islanders took their first lead in the second quarter when Marissa Shelton hit a jumper. With seconds left in the half, Tiara Abron delivered a three-pointer to give Texas A&M-Corpus Christi a 25-24 halftime advantage.

Northwestern State regained the lead in the third quarter when Carla Celaya hit a corner three-pointer, putting the Demons ahead 29-27. The Demons pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 65-49.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi vs NSU (Men):

The men’s game proved more competitive. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi took an early lead when Franck Yetna hit the opening three-pointer.

Northwestern State stayed close as Izzy Miles scored on a layup, but the Islanders maintained a 13-7 advantage. Corpus Christi extended their lead when Jaiden Haire hit a hook shot with eight minutes left in the first half, making it 28-15.

The Demons battled back before halftime. Micah Thomas hit a fadeaway jumper as Northwestern State cut the deficit to 40-36 at the break.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi stormed ahead in the second half when Haire grabbed a rebound and scored to give the Islanders a commanding 61-47 lead.

Northwestern State mounted a comeback as Omar Adegbola hit a three-pointer to pull within one point. Willie Williams gave the Demons a 72-69 lead with a post move and basket.

With one minute remaining, D’Avion Houston hit a deep three-pointer for the Islanders, taking a 75-74 lead.

With seven seconds on the clock and trailing by one, Thomas hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give Northwestern State the 79-78 victory.
