ARLINGTON, Texas — Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels went down with a hamstring injury early in the third quarter of Sunday’s 44-22 loss to the Dallas Cowboys and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.
With just under 12 minutes left in the quarter, Daniels was injured during a strip-sack by Cowboys defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and immediately grabbed the back of his right leg. He hobbled off the field with team athletic trainers by his side and went straight to the blue medical tent on the sideline.
Daniels went back to the locker room and was ruled out shortly after.
“He definitely wanted back in,” Washington coach Dan Quinn said, adding that the score had no bearing on the team keeping Daniels out. “He’ll have an MRI, so I’ll have a better update tomorrow.”
Asked further about Daniels’ injury, Quinn said: “I know it was his hamstring. Maybe he felt it on the play even prior. But as far as on the specific play, I don’t have an update for you.”
The Cowboys capped their drive with a 5-yard Dak Prescott touchdown pass to Jake Ferguson while Daniels was getting treated, prompting backup Marcus Mariota to start warming up. Four plays in, on a third-and-6 with six minutes and 11 seconds left in the quarter, Mariota was picked off by Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland, who returned it 68 yards for a touchdown. Mariota finished the game.
Sunday’s game was Daniels’ third start back after missing two games with a left knee injury. He was injured late in a Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers and, despite finishing the game, was in noticeable discomfort. An MRI revealed a sprain that would force him to miss the first start of his career. Mariota started both games that Daniels missed.
