Hoop Madness Team of the Week: Idalou Lady Cats

  • January 12, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The #3 Idalou Lady Cats (20-4, 7-1) are the Hoop Madness Team of the Week after defeating 6A Frenship 40-37 on the road Tuesday evening and beating Littlefield 66-34 on Friday.

The Lady Cats have won their last nine games, playing some good basketball as they head into their back half of district play. Idalou opened up their 2025-2026 season on the road at Lubbock Cooper where they lost by three points but then went on to win five straight by 39 points or more. Since then, Idalou has only lost three games, dominating both on the offensive and defensive front.

Idalou started the week off on the road at 6A Frenship on Tuesday, where they trailed by two after the first quarter, tied it up at halftime and took the lead in the third quarter. A strong defensive effort by the Lady Cats would give them the three-point win over the Tigers. Karsyn Lutrick also earned the #6 play in Shelbie’s Sensational 6 Plays of the Week with her nice catch and shoot three-pointer against Frenship. They then turned around to host Littlefield, Friday night and that defensive performance just continued into that one where they held Littlefield to just 34 points, beating them by 32 points.

Lady Cat’s head coach Tyler Helms says this team’s calling card is their defensive performance, and that was evident in both games this week, earning them the Hoop Madness Team of the Week title. Idalou had multiple defensive steals throughout both games, turning defense into offense which helped them go 2-0 this week and earned them the top spot in Shelbie’s Sensational 6 Plays of the Week!

Idalou sits at #3 in 3A play and 7-1 in district play, second place behind Shallowater, their lone district loss, falling to the Fillies on the road in early December by just six points.

But up next, the Idalou Lady Cats get the chance at a rematch against Shallowater, hosting the Fillies Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 6:15 p.m. Shallowater is ranked #17 compared to the #3 Lady Cats, but Idalou knows rankings don’t matter when it comes to game time; the Fillies are 16-6 overall on the season, 7-0 in district play, winners of their last three.
