LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Saturday marked the sixth anniversary of a crash that killed two first responders and prompted safety improvements across the nation.
Officer Nicholas Reyna and Fire Lieutenant Eric Hill died Jan. 11, 2020, when they were struck by a passing vehicle while responding to a crash along the north interstate. The morning was cold and icy.

The crash led to numerous safety improvements for crash response in Lubbock and nationally, including crash notification in vehicle technology, helmets and roadway blocking.
The names of Hill, Reyna and Lubbock County SWAT Commander Joshua Bartlett were added to the Lubbock Regional Public Safety Memorial in 2021. The memorial is located at 66th and Quaker.
