Scattered showers to start the week before breezy conditions return

  • October 13, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – If you’ve stepped outside this evening, you’ve probably felt a hint of moisture in the air after several days of bone-dry warmth.

Light showers have been sweeping across the South Plains, and while the radar looks busy, not all of that rain is making it to the ground just yet.

After days of sunshine and warm wind, the air near the surface is still really dry. So many of these early showers are what’s known as virga, rain that evaporates before it lands.

That will start to change as those virga showers keep falling and gradually moisten the lower atmosphere. This will help the next round of rain reach the ground.

By late evening, overnight, conditions will be humid enough for scattered showers and a few rumbles of thunder, but no severe weather is expected. However, a gusty wind or two can’t be ruled out.

Early Monday, most areas will see scattered showers, then mostly cloudy skies through the afternoon.

A weak cold front will slide into the Panhandle early Monday but will likely stall out before it moves far south. This will cause temperatures to have a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde personality.

In the northwest conditions will be cooler and cloudy with temperatures in the upper 60s-low 70s. In the southeast it will be warmer with highs in the 80s.

After Monday’s gray start, sunshine returns quickly by Tuesday. High pressure will rebuild over the region, bringing warm, dry, and breezy weather through mid-week.

Those breezy winds will also bring elevated fire weather conditions midweek.

By Thursday or Friday, another Pacific storm is expected to move east, possibly pushing another weak front across the area by Thursday or Friday.

It’s too far out to nail down any specifics on rain chances. For now, the forecast stays mostly rain-free heading into next weekend, with temperatures still running above normal for mid-October.
