San Antonio City Council will hold a special session Thursday, Jan. 22, to discuss the increased presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement here, according to a statement from District 1 Councilwoman Sukh Kaur.
Kaur, who chairs council’s Public Safety Committee, revealed details of the meeting in a Saturday Instagram video, saying Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones requested that the entire council meet to discuss ICE operations in the city and the level to which San Antonio police are required to cooperate with the agency.
The announcement comes less than a week after ICE agent Jonathan Ross shot and killed Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, on the streets of Minneapolis. Protests erupted nationwide — including in San Antonio — over the killing, which was captured on video.
Kaur said the meeting will take place at 1 p.m. and include time for public comments, though she didn’t specify where it will take place.
“We hope that we can all have a good conversation about what we’re required to do, but making sure we’re still keeping all members of our community safe,” Kaur said in the Instagram clip.
During a Saturday anti-ICE protest that brought roughly 1,000 people to the streets in San Antonio, organizers pledged to attend the Jan. 22 meeting and voice concerns about Trump immigration’s increasingly aggressive immigration sweeps.
As the White House has ramped up its deportation plans, ICE agents have arrested immigrants in the Alamo City showing up for scheduled asylum hearings and rounded up at least 140 people during a November raid on a food truck park off San Pedro Ave.
