Lady Chaps defeat the Lady Wranglers in a thriller, while the Chaps power to victory over the Wranglers in a top-10 matchup.
MIDLAND, Texas — Midland College men’s and women’s basketball earn the doubleheader sweep Monday over rival Odessa College.
The Lady Chaps held off the Lady Wranglers 60-58 after an 18-2 run by Odessa College erased a 15-point Midland College lead in the fourth quarter. Lady Wranglers had a chance at the end to tie and send it to overtime, but it was short. It’s the Lady Chaps first win in the series since 2023.
Diana Szakolczi led the Lady Chaps with a game-high 15 points. Aniyah Mayberry had 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Latisha Wilson added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Jazmine Hansley helped lead the Odessa College comeback with a team-high 14 points, four assists, three rebounds, and three steals. Arminda Joaquim also ended in double figures with 10 points and four rebounds.
The men’s matchup featured a top-10 showdown between undefeated No. 2 Midland College and No. 8 Odessa College.
It was tight early, but Antoine “Bo” Hurns was scorching hot to start for the Chaparrals with 17 of his game-high 19 points, including five-made 3-pointers, in the first eight minutes of action. Hurns also finished with six assists and five rebounds.
Solomon Ominu finished with 18 points and three rebounds, while Cayden Reed had an efficient 15 points, four assists, and three steals.
Ahmere Carson led the Wranglers with a team-high 14 points, JD Bradford added 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists off the bench, and Jaiden Reynolds had 10 points.
Midland College next heads to Frank Phillips College, while Odessa College goes to Western Texas College on Thursday, Jan. 15 with the women at 5:45 p.m. and the men soon after at 7:30 p.m.
