2. Several major Texas death row appeals loom in 2026 amid drop in executions

Several appeals in some of Texas’ highest-profile capital punishment cases are set for 2026 as the state continues to maintain a historically low number of executions.

2025 marked the second year Texas was not the leading state in executions in a single year, but the state is still the overall leader nationally in the death penalty. Harris County alone, which handed down its 300th death sentence last year, accounts for more executions than any other state.

Venezuelans in San Antonio celebrate Maduro’s capture

For San Antonio’s Venezuelan population, Zulia’s Kitchen is more than a restaurant. It’s a gathering place where those in the diaspora can connect—exactly what owner Morelys Diaz always wanted it to be.

On Jan. 3, they knew where to go. People flowed into the restaurant all day long to celebrate the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro with music, traditional food and many chants of “Venezuela libre.”
