EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — An El Paso woman was arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

El Paso County Animal Welfare officers responded to an anonymous complaint about possible animal cruelty at a residence on the 200 block of Farnborough.

When they arrived, they found a dog with a large, untreated wound on its back, housed in a small crate.

The dog’s owner, Leticia Portillo, 50, allowed officers to examine the injured animal.

Officers issued a “Possible Animal Cruelty Violation Notice” and instructed Portillo to seek immediate veterinary care.

On Jan. 8, El Paso County Sheriff’s detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Portillo on charges of cruelty to non-livestock animals.

Her bond was set at $3,000.

Sheriff Oscar Ugarte stated, “Animal cruelty will not be tolerated in our community. We take these cases seriously and will continue working to ensure animals are protected and those responsible for neglect or abuse are held accountable.” Portillo was subsequently arrested and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility.
