The city’s flagship youth workforce initiative opens applications for Summer 2026

Plano’s commitment to preparing the next generation of leaders takes center stage this month as the Plano Mayor’s Summer Internship Program (PMSIP) officially launches its 13th year.

Mayor John Muns and the city of Plano kicked off the 2026 program on Jan. 13 at the Capital One Conference Center, marking the opening of the application period for rising Plano ISD juniors and seniors seeking paid, career-building summer internships.

Since its founding in 2014, the program has connected more than 1,000 students with hands-on professional experiences across North Texas.

A Proven Pathway To Real-World Experience

Presented by Capital One, PMSIP pairs students with local businesses, nonprofits and civic organizations for internships that emphasize both professional development and real-world exposure. Last summer alone, 87 students participated with support from more than 65 community partners.

Interns earn a minimum of $13 per hour and work between 20 and 40 hours per week during the program’s June 8 through July 31 internship period. Before placement, qualified students complete a full day of professional skills training, including resume building, interview preparation and personal branding, followed by interviews with participating employers at a dedicated job fair.

“The Plano Mayor’s Summer Internship Program is one of our community’s most powerful tools for expanding economic mobility,” Mayor Muns said. “It helps ensure we are preparing a strong, skilled, future-ready workforce.”

Strong Community And Corporate Support

Capital One serves as the founding and presenting sponsor, with additional backing from major employers including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Toyota Motor North America, Samsung, PepsiCo, Texas Health Resources Plano and dozens more. Plano ISD leadership also plays a key role in supporting student participation and long-term success.

Superintendent Dr. Theresa Williams emphasized the program’s impact beyond the summer months, noting that internships help students build confidence, explore career pathways and develop skills that extend well past graduation.

How To Apply Or Get Involved

The student application window opens Jan. 16 and runs through Feb. 9, or until 300 applications are received. Businesses and nonprofit organizations interested in hosting interns or supporting the program can find additional details, applications and updates at planomayorsinterns.org.

As the program enters its 13th year, PMSIP continues to stand out as a model for public-private collaboration, giving Plano students early access to meaningful work experiences while strengthening the city’s future workforce.
