CANUTILLO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — The Canutillo Independent School District Board of Trustees officially appointed Dr. Josue D. Borrego as the new Superintendent of Schools on Monday.
The decision was made during a special board meeting on Monday, finalizing his appointment after he was unanimously selected as the lone finalist in December.
After a state-mandated waiting period, Borrego, who was an associate superintendent and senior executive director in the Houston Independent School District, will now assume the role later this month.
“I am thrilled to join the Canutillo ISD family and to work alongside the dedicated educators, administrators and auxiliary staff who make up this amazing district as we continue to prioritize education for the children of this community,” Dr. Borrego said. “I thank the Board of Trustees for placing their trust in me during this critical moment for Canutillo. I vow to give everything I have to meet our shared goals.”
Board President Sergio Martinez previously expressed confidence in Borrego’s ability to improve student outcomes, stating, “Dr. Borrego brings with him an impressive record of helping schools and school systems improve student outcomes. The board is confident he can produce similar, if not greater, results here in Canutillo.”
Dr. Borrego previously served as Senior Executive Director in the Houston Independent School District, where he collaborated with senior academic leaders to align instructional and operational initiatives. Under his leadership, one school improved its rating from an F to an A in the Texas Education Agency’s 2023-24 Accountability System, a transformation highlighted in the 2024 TEA Annual Report.
His career also includes roles as an Assistant Principal and Principal in the Dallas Independent School District, where campuses under his leadership received accolades for student performance and instructional innovation, including the Gold Ribbon from the Children at Risk Report.
The appointment of Borrego and the finalization of his contract come after the board spent two months gathering input, overseeing applications, and interviewing candidates.
