EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The lethargic eagle the El Paso Zoo veterinary team is taking care of, has died, according to a Facebook post on Thursday, Jan. 14.

As KTSM previously reported, the zoo’s veterinary team was taking care of a sick bald eagle from New Mexico back in December 2025. A good Samaritan reported the bird first to the Gila Wildlife Rescue in Silver City.

Medical staff stated that the bird was “extremely thin” and anemic.

“Despite more than a week of intensive veterinary treatment for severe emaciation and suspected lead exposure (pending confirmation), his condition was too critical to overcome,” read the Facebook post.

“We’re grateful for the community’s support as our team works to care for injured, sick, and orphaned raptors and connect El Pasoans to nature,” the team said.

Donations for the El Paso Zoo’s Rehabilitation Program can be made through the Paso del Norte Community Foundation.

“El Paso Zoo celebrates the value of animals and natural resources. It creates opportunities for people to rediscover their connection to nature,” the post ended.
