Texas football is one of six schools to send a first-round pick to the NFL in each of the last three draft cycles, joining Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Oregon and Michigan. 

It might be tough to extend that streak to four years in 2026.

Linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. looks like Texas’ best bet to crack the first round when the NFL Draft takes place on April 23. But first-round mock drafts published in the last 10 days by ESPN, CBS and USA Today all excluded Hill and the other members of Texas’ 2026 draft class like Malik Muhammad and Jack Endries. (A recent first-round mock from Pro Football Focus did include Hill.)

Don’t count out Hill’s ability to lift his stock over the next three months. But, if Texas’ streak does end, it won’t reflect the quality of the talent the Longhorns are producing — at least, not entirely.

Wednesday was the final day for underclassmen to notify the NFL of their intent to declare for the draft. With that deadline passed, the Longhorns are set to lose three players who could have returned to school: Hill, Muhammad and Endries. Last offseason, six Texas players left school early to head to the NFL, including two first-round picks in Matthew Golden and Kelvin Banks Jr.

In this cycle, one can make the argument that Texas is retaining its best two NFL Draft prospects in left tackle Trevor Goosby and quarterback Arch Manning. 

The draft discussion around Manning never quite matched the hype heights typically scaled by the top quarterbacks in the class. That’s because the tea leaves always indicated Manning was more likely to stay than go. His grandfather, Archie, indicated before Manning even took a snap as Texas’ full-time starter that he’d be back for 2026. A slow start to Manning’s 2025 campaign muted any buzz, and the Manning family told ESPN on Dec. 16 that he’d be back. 

“I feel like I developed a lot this year, especially towards the back half, and I want to keep it going,” Manning said before Texas’ bowl game against Michigan. “There’s no reason to leave. I feel like I’ve got a lot of football left to play, and I’m excited to still be a part of this team.”

Goosby’s return was more surprising. Ranked as one of the top five tackles in the class by well-respected ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper, Goosby had a shot to hear his name called in the first round if he performed well at the NFL Draft combine and at Texas’ pro day.

Instead, he’ll be back in the burnt orange after a solid 2025 season in which he allowed a 3.3% pressure rate on his pass-blocking reps. Notably, he’ll get to spend a year on campus with his younger brother, Austin, who will be playing basketball for coach Sean Miller.

Their returns give the Longhorns additional experience in an era where its value has never been more obvious. Indiana and Miami, who will play for the national championship next week, started players with 3.8 years of college experience — on average —in their College Football Playoff semifinal games.

Sometimes, recent history shows, it’s better to be more experienced than more talented. With Manning and Goosby in tow, the Longhorns can have both qualities at two of the most important positions on the field.
