HCSO Chief of Field Operations Command John Nanny said they were called at approximately 3:47 p.m. A female caller reported there was a man acting suspiciously and claiming to be a police officer near her home.

Two deputies responded to the scene and found the man on Ridlon Street. They asked him repeatedly if he could show them his official identification, which he was unable to provide.

“The male became increasingly evasive and suspicious and at one point stepped back and produced a handgun,” Nanny said.

At that point, Nanny said the suspect fired at the two deputies. The deputies returned fire and struck the suspect. They attempted to provide medical care and called for EMS, but the suspect died at the scene.

Nanny said the man was not wearing any kind of uniform and was in plain clothes. The woman who made the call said she had never seen the man before.

“It didn’t appear that he was a police officer,” Nanny said.

The suspect is approximately 50-years-old. The medical examiner’s office will do a toxicology to see if the man was under the influence of any substances.

Neither of the two responding deputies were hurt in the incident. One is 37-years-old with 13 years on the job. The other is 40-years-old with four and a half years on the force.

Authorities continue to investigate the shooting and incident.
