A vacant Arlington junior high school undergoing demolition caught fire early Wednesday morning.

The Arlington Fire Department said they were alerted to reports of smoke coming from Carter Junior High School at 701 Tharp Street just after midnight. When firefighters arrived, they confirmed smoke coming from the school’s roof.

The fire department said they called a second alarm due to the building’s size and construction type. A third alarm was called after they found worsening conditions on the second and third floors.

After about 90 minutes, the fire was brought under control.

No one was in the building at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

A bond program passed in 2019 called for the school to be demolished and replaced with Joey Rodriguez Junior High School.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Arlington Fire Department and the Arlington Independent School District.
