For the next few days, North Texas will celebrate the legacy of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

MLK Day commemorates his birthday, which was Jan. 15, 1929. The annual federal holiday is observed on the third Monday in January, which this year falls on Jan. 19.

If you’re looking for ways to celebrate, educate or volunteer in the community, here is a list of events and activities happening across the Metroplex:

ARLINGTON

IRVING

MESQUITE

Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. MLK Parade & Celebration. Following the parade, a community gathering will take place at the Mesquite Arts Center. For more information, visit the City of Mesquite website.

PLANO

Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. MLK Parade. Immediately following the parade, attendees are invited to participate in the Collin County NAACP “Call to Action,” reinforcing the day’s focus on civic engagement, advocacy and continued community involvement. Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. MLK Celebration- The Dream is Alive. The pre-show will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Robinson Fine Arts Center.
